Nagawicka Lake Project

The owners of this home contacted me to design a landscape that complimented the contemporary design of their home while utilizing a naturalization approach desired by the homeowners. Being a lakefront home, approval from the City Planner would be necessary which would possibly limit what could be designed and installed.

The property required retaining walls with stair systems to gain access to the lakefront. I was limited to only 18" wall heights along the sides of the property and 3' along the lakeside of the residence. Setbacks and sewer easements confined how the lakeside could be designed and utilized. I designed a landscape that incorporated a contemporary wall and stairs system that complimented the homes architecture. Large rectangular "slate" like material with angle inlays mirrored the upper deck. A reflecting pool was designed to add to the contemporary feel. Since the original retaining wall design could not be used because of easement and lake height restrictions, different ornamental grasses added year round color and interest while disguise the grade change. Hidden paths were only visible from the deck height. When viewing the home from the lake, only colorful textured plantings supported the homes foundation.

The roadside of the home already had maturing trees. We took advantage of these and had the driveway run between them. A very simple "clean" landscape showcased symmetrical plantings and pavers. Night lighting was a very important aspect of the design. It looked beautiful up lighting the trees, home and arbor.
